Technical features

• Airport area : 600 ha (1,500 acres).
• Two freight terminals: 13,000 sq. m. (140,000 sq. ft).
• 4 private deconsolidation depots: nearly 10,000 sq. m.

2 office buildings:

Next to the two freight terminals, two buildings house business offices: the first accounting for 1400 sq. m. (15,000 sq. ft) and the second - 400 sq. m. built in 1996 to satisfy the increasing demand.

A complex of cool rooms:

In 1993, Marseille-Provence brought into service an ultramodern building equipped with "Aérofrigo" cool rooms (1200 sq. m.) in conformity with E.U. standards and approved as a border inspection post. Open 24h /24, it can accept fish, flowers, fruit and vegetables, and frozen goods, as well as chemicals and even … live animals.

4 express freight logistics platforms:

In 1994, Jet Services put into service a 2000 sq. m. deconsolidation depot. In the same year, TAT Express opened its own private terminal covering 1800 sq. m. In 1997, Chronopost inaugurated a private building of more than 3000 sq. m. lined with 2 unloading docks. In 1998, DHL and the Airport together made investments to transform a hangar into a 1500 sq. m. deconsolidation depot for us by DHL. All the deconsolidation depots have direct access to the runways.

Aircraft parking areas next to the freight zone :
In 1997, new aircraft parking areas (15,000 sq. m. [161,500 sq. ft]) were commissioned, located next to the express freight buildings. They can handle three cargo aircraft simultaneously.

Future project:

The programme undertaken by the Marseille-Provence Chamber of Commerce and Industry will ultimately accept 200,000 metric tons on an area of 30 hectares (74 acres) reserved for the development of new freight handling facilities.

Achievements in 1999:

Third airport freight terminal, with an area of 6000 sq. m.

Parking:

6,200 places

Freight:

Marseille-Provence, cargo hub for Southern Europe In the heart of Southern Europe, the Marseille-Provence Airport is the natural doorway to the African continent, the Mediterranean basin and Southern Europe. It is second largest airport in France for freight handling, with 38,500 metric tons per year. 77 towns have direct links via 25 scheduled airlines (with 55 scheduled routes).

Passengers:

Third largest for passenger transport, the Marseille-Provence international airport greeted more than 6 million (6,016,884) travellers in 1999, and is aiming for 6,500,000 for 2000. It is also 2nd after Paris for passenger traffic to North
African and Corsica. 26 scheduled airlines and 80 towns with direct links (scheduled and charter) in 27 countries, i.e., more than 900 regular weekly flights (around 620 domestic and 310 international). 44 flights daily link Marseille to Paris; at the busiest times, a shuttle leaves every 30 minutes.

Geostrategic positioning

Located in the heart of the Bouches-du-Rhône département, between land, sea and river, the Marseille-Provence Airport is less than two hours by car away from the major towns of the département and the région - Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Marseille, Montpellier, Nîmes, Toulon - and from the important economic zones: port zones, the industrial zones of Vitrolles, Arles, Rousset, etc…

Its central geographic position, midway between Barcelona, Lyon et Milan, makes Marseille-Provence the most competitive hub time-wise and cost-wise for concentrating the freight flows of Southern Europe.

Site management

It is managed by the Marseille-Provence Chamber of Commerce and Industry ("CCI").
